Entrepreneurial Journal – Week 4
This week, I had the opportunity to design and work a wedding
up in Hyannis, Massachusetts. It was at
the Wiano Club, and the church was St. Francis Xavier, the church the Kennedy
family attends when they are on the Cape.
Freelancing is something I enjoy doing because I get to work and earn
money while not having any of the stress of pulling off the entire event. It was a very large budget wedding, with 5
florists, 5 assistants and 3 support staff in tow. It took us a full 48 hours to make it all
happen. It was a very large scale
wedding and having all of the elements in place was crucial. I worked in Westport for two days before
heading up to Hyannis, and this was my first time working with this
colleague. My responsibility was to
build the large wreaths for the front door of the church, work on all of the
personal flowers (bouquets and bouts), the pew arrangements and the garland for
the staircases. We made as many of the
arrangements we could prior to leaving.
From this experience, I learned many new things. I really focused on having my eyes wide open
to see if there were things she did different than I that worked better. I discovered better ways to mix conditioning
formulas to make sure it is consistent and more user friendly. I learned what a difference it makes to have
a cooler room, rather than just a standing cooler. I loved working with my fellow designers and
hearing of their experiences in the business.
